Agriculture Development in Rwanda The National Institute of Statistics of Rwanda is pleased to present the report of the National Agricultural Survey 2008 (NAS 2008) undertaken on Rwandan territory from September 2007 to August 2008 in collaboration with its partners and stakeholders in the field of Agricultural Statistics. This report comes at the right point in time since Agriculture accounts for a third of Rwanda’s GDP, constitutes the main economic activity for the rural households and remains their main source of income. In 2005/2006, the agricultural population was estimated to be 89.6% of the total population.
Secondly, the objective of The National Agriculture Policy (NAP), formulated by the Ministry of Agriculture and Animal Resources is to contribute in a sustainable manner to poverty reduction through increased and diversified households’ incomes, and to support Rwanda’s economic growth while ensuring food security for the entire population.
Lastly, the country’s economic development and poverty reduction strategy (EDPRS) defines a large number of programs in the agriculture sector, these include; the intensification of sustainable production systems in crop cultivation and animal husbandry; building the technical and organizationalcapacity of farmers; promoting commodity chains and agribusiness, and strengthening the institutional framework of the sector at central and local level.
To support the decision-making, measure the impact of interventions in the rural sector, and allow the monitoring of the implementation of the NAP and EDPRS programs, the Rwandan Government and its development partners need up-to-date and reliable statistics on the agricultural sector. Along this line, it was necessary to collect information based on a post harvest agriculture survey to assess the current situation of the country with regards to the targets set by poverty reduction programs.
