The Fourth Rwanda Population and Housing Census (RPHC4) allow us to analyse migration among the resident population of Rwanda. The analysis is structured around two main concepts: lifetime migration, i.e. persons

whose place of birth is not the same as the current place of residence, and recent migration, i.e. persons who moved to their current district of residence five years or less prior to the Census. The data indicate that migration

in the country, be it lifetime or recent, is an urban phenomenon. About 48% of the resident population in urban areas and 14% in rural areas have experienced a lifetime migration. Similarly, about 25% of the resident

population in urban areas and 6% in rural areas have experienced a recent migration.
