In the first quarter of 2025, GDP at current market prices was estimated at Frw 5,255 billion, up from Frw 4,486 billion in 2024 Q1. Services contributed 46% to GDP, agriculture contributed 24% while industry contributed 23%. Net direct taxes accounted for 7%.
The overall GDP grew by 7.8%; Agriculture increased by 2%, Industry increased by 9%, while Services increased by 9%.
Agriculture
The overall performance of the agriculture sector was 2% and contributed 0.4 percentage points to the overall GDP growth rate.
Within agriculture, food crops production decreased by 1%. The export crops production increased by 3%.
Industry
The overall growth of industry was 9% and contributed 1.7 percentage points to the overall GDP growth rate. Within industry, mining and quarrying decreased by 3%, construction activities increased by 13%, while manufacturing activities increased by 7%.
The growth in manufacturing was driven by a 22% increase in manufacturing of metal products, machinery & equipment, a 21% increase in manufacturing of non-metallic mineral products, 15% increase in manufacturing of chemicals, rubber & plastic products, 10% increase in manufacturing wood & paper, printing. Food processing increased by 2%, while textile, clothing and leather products decreased by 4%.
Services
The overall growth of the services sector was 9% and contributed 4.7 percentage points to the overall GDP growth rate. Within services, wholesale and retail trade grew by 14%; transport services grew by 4%. Among other services, hotels and restaurants grew by 5%, information & communication services increased by 19%, financial services increased by 8%, public administration services increased by 14%, education services increased by 5%, and health services decreased by 1%.
