Seasonal Agricultural Survey - 2022 Annual Report

In the agricultural year 2021/2022, the National Institute of Statistics of Rwanda (NISR) conducted the Seasonal Agriculture Survey (SAS) covering three agricultural seasons;

  • Season A started in September 2021 and ended with February 2022
  • Season B started in March 2022 and ended with June 2022, while
  • Season C  started in July and ends in September 2022

Results of SAS 2022 estimate the total country land area at 2.377 million of hectares, out of which agricultural land (land potential for agriculture) covered 1.402 million hectares (59% of total country land) in season A. Out of the total agricultural land, 1.067 million hectares was used for Seasonal crops in season A, nearly 0.6 million hectares are area under permanent crops, 0.135 million ha under permanent pasture and nearly 0.1 million ha was fallow coverage. Likewise, season B estimates the total country land at 2.377 million hectares out of which agricultural land (land potential for agriculture) covered 1.393 million hectares (58.6% of total country land), Out of the total agricultural land, 1.014 million hectares was used for Seasonal crops, nearly 0.6 million hectares are area under permanent crops, 0.133 million ha under permanent pasture while 0.125 million hectares was fallow.

In 2022, SAS results show that 33.1 percent of farmers used improved seeds in season A, compared to 8.7 percent in season B, and 26.1 percent in season C. In regards to fertilisers, 69.7 percent of farmers used organic fertilizer on their farms in season A compared to 57.9 percent in season B and 82.3 percent in season C, while 38.6 percent used inorganic fertilizer in season A compared to 27.5 percent in season B and 71.5 percent in season C. Moreover, 19.8 percent of farmers used pesticides compared to 15.9 percent in season B and 70.1 percent in season C. The findings show that 92.1 percent of farmers practiced anti-erosion activities in season A compared to 91.4 percent in season B and 95.9 percent in season C, while 8.2 percent of farmers practiced irrigation in season A compared to 8.0 percent of farmers in season B and 62.9 in season C.
