Innovative tools for data management and data dissemination in Rwanda
The National Institute of Statistics of Rwanda has put in place a number of innovative tools to significantly revolutionize data management and data dissemination in Rwanda.
The new platforms are Rwanda Statistical Data Portal, a friendly-user and powerful platform for time-series data visualization in tables, charts and maps; National Data Archive (NADA) for microdata and associated metadata; Statistical Data and Metadata eXchange (SDMX) registry for data exchange and Rapid SMS for data collection and dissemination.
The existing platforms like DevInfo Rwanda and IMIS Rwanda have been recognized as a gear of significant move in monitoring and evaluation of global, regional and national commitments. Today, users can visualize time-series development indicators over a period of time, perform a comprehensive analysis at national and district levels, utilize presentation ready-graphics or create their own and share their views and work with others on statistical information.
In this regard, NISR has co-hosted the workshop themed ‘Open access to statistical data by NISR and dissemination of Gender Statistics Report 2013’ with UN Women on 10th May 2013 at SERENA Hotel, Kigali.
The main objective of the workshop was to inform the users of statistical data at large about the ‘open’ nature of statistical data that NISR is producing, its availability and means of access. Hence, NISR intended to showcase to participants (development partners, researchers, academia, government institutions, media and the private sector) the easy availability and the modern IT means of accessing time-series data, microdata and associated metadata from NISR. It is evident that the Short Message Service (SMS) innovation will be a response to time consumption and complexity of the task which burdened data collection data dissemination processes.
Interestingly, the workshop featured multi-stakeholders discussion about the new platforms demonstrated, and experienced delegates from United Nations Statistics Division (UNSD), PARIS 21 and PROGNOZ will share with participants their experiences and importance of these platforms in the global context.
The workshop has also been an opportunity to disseminate the Gender Statistics Report 2013 which we believe has significantly contributed to evidence-based planning and to the evaluation and monitoring of great slides that Rwanda makes in promoting gender equality and empowerment of women as evidenced in other reports that NISR currently produces.
